For more than 50 years, The Second Baptist Church Inspirational Choir has provided the gift of song to Jefferson City's historic African American congregation. Under the direction of music minister Barbara Burgess, the 30-member choir will provide an evening of music in the gospel tradition. The Church's origin is 1859, with early slave worshipers attending the predominantly white First Baptist Church. With the growth of the "colored" congregation, the membership chose their own deacons and held worship services, adopting the name Second Baptist Church in 1865. The present membership includes seven generations from Maggie Henderson, who was one of the organizers of the early Church.
